Bodywork
If you suffer from chronic or recurring aches and pains in your body; if you have poor posture and are prone to injury; if you feel like your yoga practice is limited because of energetic blockages; then I’d like to introduce you to the bodywork practice of Dr. Ida P. Rolf—commonly known as “Rolfing” or “Structural Integration.”
Are you wondering if Structural Integration is for you? Ask yourself:
- Do you want relief from chronic pain and tension?
- Would you like to feel lighter, leaner and more spacious in body and mind?
- Do you want to increase your performance as a yogi, a dancer, runner, performer, or athlete?
- Are you someone that understands your mind-body connection, and wants to find outer body freedom through inner body work?
- Are you ready to explore your full potential of body and mind through a new, integrated, body and mind practice?
Maybe you’ve tried every bodywork modality out there or maybe you’ve never tried even one… either way, how are you supposed to know if Structural Integration can REALLY help?
Let me explain what Structural Integration is all about.

During our Structural Integration (also called “Rolfing”) sessions, you and I will work on every part of your body. This is much more than a deep tissue massage—it’s truly a holistic approach. So if your neck is the chronic source of your pain, we might start with working deep into the neck and shoulders, but immediately go deeper—to the source of the imbalance that almost always involves entire interconnected sections of the body.
Structural Integration is so powerful because the benefits are long-lasting, and eventually permanent. While other forms of deep tissue and bodywork can be wonderful for relieving your pain and discomfort symptoms, most do very little to address the fundamental CAUSE of the imbalance in the first place.

How long does it take?
Just like with yoga, real bodywork takes some time and focused work to make changes. With Structural Integration, I generally start with a 10-session program where we’ll work methodically through the body one area at a time so that after the series is complete, you continue to IMPROVE rather than regress to the same old aches and pains.
In a way, a Structural Integration is a training course, training your body in a new way of movement and alignment.
This sounds too good to be true. How is it possible?
SI works on the FASCIA. The connective tissue system of the body. Connective tissue is proverbial shrink-wrap that encases and interpenetrates almost every layer of the body.
Think of an orange. If you peel the orange, you have a white layer of pith underneath. Then you have the sections that are individually wrapped and then each piece of pulp. The body is like this. You have skin, then the milky white layer beneath, then every muscle group wrapped, then each individual muscle, down to the muscle fiber and the cell! It is a very intricate spider-web like system. Dr. Rolf made the radical statement that connective tissue is what creates the structure of the body!
Okay, so when there is INJURY or TRAUMA, the body has to figure out how to create stability, so it begins to make more connective tissue, layer upon layer that gets dense as a support. Because fascia is an interconnected matrix, strain in one place affects all the other points along this line of tissue.
So how do you change that?

In my experience to loosen connective tissue adhesions, which means to create the possibility of more opening and greater freedom in the body, there are two options-
- YOGA or directed stretching using rollers and balls,
- STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION (a.k.a. Rolfing)
So why should I choose Structural Integration over yoga?
In my experience, a combination of the two is the most powerful, effective, efficient and life-enhancing combination there is to move towards optimal vitality.
The thing is…
Structural Integration is faster. What could take you months or years in yoga practice (and that is quality yoga with an educated teacher speaking directly to YOUR needs) can change in one or two sessions with this work!
Structural Integration will take you to the next level of awareness and performance in both your daily life and the performance of the activities or practices that you do.
Here are some FAQ’s- frequently asked questions:

How can I make sure I get the most out of the work so I hold the changes?
As part of our work together, I will look at how you stand, walk and move. Each week I will give you observation or movement exercises. So you will be an active participant in the process that is the most direct route to understanding and change. Your openness and willingness and ongoing communication between us will move you towards continued growth and health.
I also offer yoga classes designed specifically to reinforce your awareness and understanding of your own body.
Do I really need ten sessions?
The work is most effective when practiced as originally intended by Dr. Rolf- in what she named “the Recipe”– a methodical step-by-step approach where each layer of the body is addressed.
Can I just sample the work to make sure it is for me?
You are welcome to come in for one session to see if the work is the right fit for you and to see we are a good match as far as a practitioner and client. Then after that session, you can decide if you would like to continue for the full ten series.
How long is each session?
Some sessions may be 45 minutes while other may be 1 ½ hours. We charge by the session (not the hour) as part of our code of ethics.
