Virtual Yoga

“I prefer to teach people in person…

But in this day and age when many people are under incredible time pressure, balancing work and family life,  when yoga has reached far and wide to every corner of the earth, but not every area has accessible yoga teachers and teachings and when more than ever yoga practice is needed to complement our lives… the webcam is the next best thing!”

Just as if you were in class, on the webcam, I can look at your alignment and compose a practice specific to you and your body.

HOME STUDY COURSES

Are you new to yoga and you want to develop a yoga practice but have specific needs or injuries that keep you from going to group class? You don’t want to take all of the teacher’s time finding you modifications.

Are you overwhelmed with all of the kinds and styles of yoga that are out there and don’t have time to experiment and weed through them all?

Are you too busy to go to a yoga class for an hour, which turns into 2 or 3 by the time you drive to and from, and really you would just like a 20 or 30 minute practice that you could do each day on your own?

Do you want a practice that is specifically tailored for your body and your lifestyle?

Would you like someone that you could check in with to see if you are doing things right?

And you could check in when you are improving with the initial poses, so that you could move onto to greater difficulty and variety?

Now you can get a home practice specifically designed for you without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Or maybe you already have a home practice but feel confused about what direction to go next and how to take yourself further?

Do you get on your mat and not have the juice or inspiration you do when you go to class?

Do you feel like your home practice doesn’t really go anywhere?

Do you know you have specific things you need to work on but are not quite sure how to get there?

Now you can get the jumpstart you need without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Yoga Teachers:
Are your classes starting to feel stale and monotonous?

Are you passionate about studying yoga but not quite sure how to get to the next level?

Do you feel a little lost about what direction to go to continue developing your skills?

Are you overwhelmed with the number of styles and options for yoga that are out there and not sure how to wade through all the information?

Do you live in an area where you don’t have access to great yoga teachers?

Do you want:

  • An ongoing relationship with a mentor teacher who knows you and your path to teaching?
  • Who is interested in helping you develop your own style and creativity accessing the inner resources you already have,
  • Who can point you in the right direction to master teachers that match with your interests?

I am now offering yoga mentoring via live webcam.

Here’s how it works. Send me an e-mail (kajyoga@yahoo.com) to schedule a date and time for a free 20 minute discovery session.
Before your session, fill out the Bodywork Yoga Questionnaire and submit it.

Of course, like any teacher/student relationship, we want to make sure that it is a good fit.

Make a list of the questions you want answered.

Be prepared to move and practice. I will be look at your body standing, in movement and in certain poses. That way together with the information you provide, I will be able to really assess the best direction for your practice.

Remember you will also be able to see me, so I can show you exactly what to do in the poses.

How many sessions so I need?
That depends on what your goals are. My experience is that 10 sessions, beginning with one a week and then spreading them out to once every three to four weeks feels like a very complete start to a home practice. Most people feel more motivated when they know they will be checking in with a teacher. The ten sessions are good for up to a year, so you can spread them out at an interval that feels most supportive to your practice. We can decide that together also.

Why does one session cost more than ten?
My experience is that everyone gets more value out of a consistent relationship. I want to reward and encourage that commitment by making ten sessions more affordable. You are making an investment in our relationship and so am I.

What if there are technical difficulties?
Part of the purpose of the discovery call is to iron out any difficulties that might occur, testing the camera and the Skype connection. Should there be a technical problem on a call, I will always honor your time.

Can you really see my body on a camera?
Yes. You will need to set up your camera/ computer in an area that is well lit. I can definitely do a great body reading with the webcam. I can still see shadows, depth, rotations, and I will be able to see your quality of movement.

Is this just like an online yoga class? Can I just use a DVD?
This is not a yoga private or a yoga class. These are sessions for us to both create a practice and then check in about your practice. I may guide you through your sequence so that I can see how you are doing it and evaluate if it is time to increase (or decrease) the difficulty. I will see what is changing and what is not. A DVD can be a great tool, but you will never get feedback on how you are doing. Because you will be able to see me, I can demonstrate to you what you are doing and how to correct it. I can give you a visual image of your posture and then talk you through changing your alignment.

Shouldn’t I find a real live teacher?
There is no substitute for face time with a teacher.
However if you found yourself answering “yes” to some of the above questions, it is probably because …
you don’t have a teacher easily accessible to you or…
you don’t have time or motivation to sort through all the studios, styles and teachers available or…
you have an injury or consideration that makes you feel like a special needs case…

So why not experience the expertise of a seasoned teacher and bodyworker who can read your body and craft a yoga practice that addresses pain and imbalance, creates greater flexibility and freedom, and enlivens you.

Shouldn’t I find a real live mentor?
A live mentor is ideal…

BUT it can be hard to find a senior teacher who can come to our classes and who has the time to have an ongoing dialogue about teaching.

In our work together, I will

  • go step by step through your process of constructing a class,
  • help you reflect on your strengths and growing areas.
  • guide you through mini-tutorials in the subject areas where you need to grow. (complete with readings, materials, and homework)
  • refer you to master teachers and further study in subject areas that are not my forte or where I think someone else would be a better resource.
  • be a worldwide reference, if I don’t know a teacher in your region, I definitely know someone who does.
  • construct an action plan for the sessions together.

Why not learn from a teacher’s teacher who has the skills of a bodyworker as well as a vast yoga tool kit, ranging from biomechanics, to Sanskrit to philosophy to pranayama.

Here’s how it works:
All you need is a computer with high speed internet, a webcam with a built-in microphone, Skype (my user name is kajyoga) and a PayPal account.

To prepare for your online lesson:
Before your lesson, make a list of your questions. Feel free to send me your list the day before so I can prepare materials if needed. If you are a teacher, send me a sequence or two of your classes beforehand. Always be prepared to practice some, so that I can see your alignment. Make sure there is plenty of light shining on you from the front to get the best quality picture possible.
