Structural Integration, or Rolfing, is a holistic body therapy developed in the US by Dr. Ida P. Rolf as part of the Human Potential Movement, in company and conversation with Moshe Feldenkrais and Alexander.

The treatment is unique in its 10 session approach, that releases chronic strain and tension patterns, by approaching the body in its volume and totality. Through touch, movement, and directed meditation and awareness, the SI practitioner loosens held stuck tissue and suggests a more optimal relationship to gravity, which allows body parts to shift into a space of greater functional harmony.

How? SI works on the FASCIA. The connective tissue system of the body. Connective tissue is proverbial shrink-wrap that encases and interpenetrates almost every layer of the body. The effects of working with connective tissue are more lasting because it is the connective tissue that creates the shape of muscles and bones and keeps them where they are.

Structural Integration proposes that greater alignment, (meaning that body parts are in the right place!) will yield more lightness and freedom, more ease to move through the world, and less energy bound up in maintaining non-functional patterns.
